How FedEx Calculates Its Fuel Surcharge

FedEx applies a fuel surcharge as a percentage of your base transportation charge on every shipment. The percentage is tied to a published table that maps diesel (for Ground) or jet fuel (for Express) prices to a surcharge rate. FedEx uses the U.S. Department of Energy / EIA national average on-highway diesel price, takes the value from the first business day of the week, and the new rate takes effect the following Wednesday, running through the next Tuesday.

Because the surcharge is a percentage of the base rate, two things drive the dollar amount you pay: the surcharge percentage (set by diesel prices) and your base rate (set by weight, zone, and dimensional weight). Lowering either lowers the surcharge in absolute dollars.

Worked example

At this week's EIA diesel of $6.18/gal the FedEx Ground surcharge is 24.50% (our estimate). On a shipment with a $40.00 base transportation charge, the fuel surcharge is $40.00 Γ— 24.50% = $9.80. At 300 shipments a month that is $2940.00 a month β€” before any accessorials, which carry the same percentage on most contracts.

How to Reduce Your FedEx Fuel Surcharge

  1. Negotiate a fuel surcharge cap. High-volume shippers can negotiate a cap on the fuel surcharge percentage in their FedEx contract β€” separate from base-rate discounts and often overlooked.
  2. Lower your dimensional weight. The surcharge is a percentage of your base rate, so a lower DIM weight cuts the surcharge in dollars. Check your FedEx DIM weight β†’
  3. Audit your invoices. Confirm the surcharge is applied to the correct base and not stacked on accessorials incorrectly. Run the invoice checker β†’
  4. Compare carriers weekly. UPS and FedEx update on different days. See the UPS fuel surcharge β†’

FedEx Fuel Surcharge β€” FAQ

What is the FedEx fuel surcharge this week?

This week (Oct 12, 2026), the FedEx Ground fuel surcharge is 24.50% (estimate), based on EIA diesel at $6.18/gallon. The live rate is shown at the top of this page and updates automatically each week from the EIA diesel index.

How is the FedEx fuel surcharge calculated?

FedEx maps the weekly DOE/EIA national average on-highway diesel price to a surcharge percentage using its published table. The value from the first business day of the week sets the rate, which takes effect the following Wednesday. Express services use a jet-fuel index instead.

When does the FedEx fuel surcharge change?

FedEx updates its fuel surcharge every week, with the new rate effective each Wednesday and running through the following Tuesday. UPS, by contrast, updates every Monday.

Why did my FedEx fuel surcharge go up when diesel didn't?

FedEx periodically revises the surcharge table itself β€” the formula that converts diesel prices into percentages. When the table is adjusted upward, your surcharge can rise even if the underlying diesel price is flat.
